Online Dramatherapy

Although dramatherapy is usually a face-to-face experience, I have successfully been able to deliver interactive  sessions online with both mainstream and SEND clients using techniques including story-telling and role-play, imagery, online art and games, music, movement and dance.

Online dramatherapy is suitable for addressing issues such as low-self-esteem, low-confidence, anxiety, depression, trauma, stress and body image.  However due to the online nature of the sessions, it is not suitable for people suffering with more serious conditions such as suicidal thoughts and therefore require urgent support.

Engaging with dramatherapy online at home has a number of potential advantages:

•     Accessing the service easy.

•     There is no need for others to know.

•     Communication may be my voice only, video or by typing messages.

•     Personal resources (e.g. photographs) will be to hand.

A computer and laptop are ideal necessities, though a tablet or mobile phone might also suffice. Also, a comfortable space free of interruptions and with the minimum of distractions is very important.

“Prefer it, it's easier.  Not in a formal way. I can be in my bedroom which is comfortable and there are photos. it's more practical because of school.  I don't have to go anywhere.  I can just come home and set it up.  Just having the thought of talking to someone is helpful to let my thoughts out. I'm less overwhelmed and taking a step back to look at everything” Feedback from a year 7 pupil.
